'The London Borough of Enfield is the northernmost of the Outer London boroughs. The borough lies within the Metropolitan Green Belt, and several of its 123 or more parks and open spaces are part of it. The ancient Enfield Chase, remnants of which still exist, occupied much of the area ... Apart from those open spaces, there are the two large reservoirs: The King George V and the William Girling collectively known as the Chingford Reservoirs situated alongside the River Lea in the east of the Borough. Covert Way is Enfield's only Local Nature Reserve.'

'The walk quickly enters real countryside and encompasses some wide views. It penetrates some way into Hertfordshire until the old centre of Cheshunt is reached, then uses the New River to take the walker back into Greater London. The extensive grounds of Forty Hall, where there are refreshment opportunities, are visited and the route finally goes via Hillyfields Park back to Gordon Hill.'

'The Hertfordshire Chain Walk is an 86-mile walk that crosses the county of Hertfordshire from south to north, starting on the northern edge of London and finishing in Cambridgeshire. Unlike the other long distance paths that I've walked, which either follow a straightforward linear route from A to B or else form a large "circle", this path consists of 15 circular walks of between 4 and 9 miles in length that are linked together to form a "chain" – hence the name Chain Walk. In fact there is a quarter mile gap between Walk 7 and Walk 8, so the Hertfordshire Chain Walk is also unusual in that it is a long distance footpath with a hole in the middle!'

'We venture to assert that Barnet is unique among London boroughs in the amount of open space which still exists in an area so close to the capital. Admittedly, an enormous amount of land has been given over to the necessary provision of homes for a growing population. But thanks to the far-sighted actions of the then Hendon Urban District Council in the twenties and thirties in buying up the estates of former great landowners (Moat Mount Open Space, Scratchwood, Arrandene Open Space to name a few) and the zoning of Totteridge Valley and its edges as Green Belt land, we still have a substantial amount of "countryside" on our doorstep.'

'Walks in the Home Counties or London itself are organised every Saturday or Sunday and are usually between 5 and 8 miles long, and normally start and finish at a station. Most walkers take a packed lunch, but normally a lunchtime stop is made at or near a pub or café. The number of walkers varies from under 10 to over 20. Many of our members are retired, and on one Monday each month we meet for lunch at a restaurant or pub.'
