The Crosses Walk
'The Moorland Crosses are a series of crosses, some ancient and some considerably newer, right across the whole North York Moors area ... In 1971 members of the Scarborough and District Search and Rescue team devised a walk around the North York Moors that took in 14 of the moorland "crosses". The purpose of the walk was to raise money to buy radios that the team needed. The intention was to complete it over a 24 hour period starting at midday from Goathland and finishing by midday on the following day. 'The following year, 1972, the walk attracted 147 entrants and took place in July. A third walk was organised in 1973 and in 1974 a book, written by Malcolm Boyes, was published about the three walks. After that the walk appears to have continued until at least 1978 and was listed in the Long Distance Walkers Association spring newsletter each year. I became aware of it in October 2008 through a post on the Walking Places Forum. I managed to get hold of a second hand copy of the book for £13 (original price 60p!) and set about plotting the route. It wasn't until May 2010 that I finally set off to experience it over a period of four days ... The "crosses" are in various states of decay. Few have any sort of religious significance and have been placed as boundary stones, way markers and even as a gravestone ...'
