The Trail follows a mix of old railways, packhorse routes and newly created tracks. It is signposted (follow the National Trail Acorn) with easy to use gates and special road crossing points.'

'Lady Mary Towneley long dreamed of the idea for a long distance route over the Pennines for horse riders and campaigned for the Pennine Bridleway National Trail for many years. Sadly she died on 13 February 2001 after a long and bravely fought illness. The Mary Towneley Loop is dedicated to her memory.'
